Unlike other cars which use a timing belt older or specialty cars use what’s called a timing chain. The chain, similar to the one on a bike, helps the engine stay in time. It makes sure that the rotating assembly of the engine is all working in unison.
The timing chain opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves. It also directs the pistons to the correct position so that when combustion happens everything runs smoothly. The timing chains are usually difficult to get to. They are sometimes concealed in plastic or metal to prevent external debris from damaging the chain.
