Gas station has a diesel and gasoline mix-up

We’ve all heard it before. Someone decides to put diesel in their gasoline engine. Well for some residents of South Lake Tahoe they thought they were filling up with gas but got a surprise. Gasoline and diesel engines are different. Spark plugs are used to ignite the fuel and keep the engine going in a gasoline engine. Whereas diesel engines ignite under high compression.

Because of this difference the fuels shouldn’t be interchanged between engine types. If it just so happens that you put in the wrong fuel you should take your car to a mechanic immediately. This is what one driver did after she filled up her SUV at the gas station. She was able to drive the car for a little while then the check engine light came on. Luckily she had only added 5 gallons to the tank so they were able to drain the fuel system.

Unfortunraley others were not so lucky. If you fill your gasoline powered car with diesel most likely the tank will have to be drained. There is also some possibility that your lines and the rest of your fuel system might need to be cleaned or replaced.

The gas station apologized for the incident but did not clarify what exactly happened. Have you ever put the wrong fuel in your car? What steps did you take?
